Ladonnis Lucas, BS, FDC, RLC, IBCLC, is a WIC Trainer/Breastfeeding Specialist at Cicatelli Associates Inc (CAI), specializing in maternal health and breastfeeding education. Ladonnis's journey in promoting maternal and infant health began over 22 years ago when she embarked on her career with WIC as a Nutritionist. Through her tenure, she progressively assumed roles of increasing responsibility, eventually serving as a Breastfeeding Services Coordinator within local WIC agencies throughout NYC. It was during her first few years at WIC that Ladonnis keenly observed the critical need for enhanced breastfeeding education and support within communities. Driven by her passion to bridge this gap, Ladonnis pursued certification as a Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) in 2009. Armed with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills, she has since been instrumental in empowering countless mothers to initiate and sustain breastfeeding successfully. As a WIC Trainer at CAI, Ladonnis leverages her wealth of experience to deliver engaging training sessions on various aspects of maternal health and breastfeeding.

Speaking In:

Innovative Strategies to Increase WIC Participation

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is among the nation's most successful, cost-effective public health programs. Yet only slightly more than half of eligible New Yorkers participate in the program. Participation rates vary widely by geography and participant group. For example, a majority WIC-eligible people participating in Medicaid or SNAP do not participate in WIC, and WIC benefit redemption rates remain low for eligible asylum-seekers.

This panel will discuss innovative strategies that New York nonprofits are taking to increase participation. Speakers will discuss healthcare strategies that state agencies could promote to improve WIC participation, as well as a new peer navigator model to increase participation rates among asylum seekers.
