Avalon Gupta VerWiebe (she/they) is the Equity, Inclusion, and Engagement Manager at the Syracuse-Onondaga Food Systems Alliance, based in Syracuse New York on Haudenosaunee Land. Prior to working with SOFSA, Avalon participated in organizing a worker-owned community grocery store in Louisville, Kentucky, managed a community garden, and took part organizing the racial justice uprisings in summer of 2020. Avalon currently leads SOFSA’s food justice work, including SOFSA's Community Listening storytelling sessions, the annual Food Justice Gathering, as well as the Food as Medicine and Urban Agriculture working groups. Avalon also is passionate about fermentation as a method of food sovereignty and teaches food preservation workshops in various community spaces throughout Onondaga County.
